Positano: Life in Lemon

After our incredible time spent in Rome and Tuscany, we made our way toward Positano. Our five-hour drive provided some of the most beautiful scenery we’ve ever seen. Mountains, hills, historic towns, countryside, farms…. countless top-notch rest areas (if you read my Tuscany post, you get what I mean). When we finally made it along the Amalfi Coast, the drive got very interesting. Kelly and I both were a bit nervous as Joey navigated his way through the windy roads along the mountainsides which did NOT have enough room for two lanes of traffic! When I could muster the courage to open my eyes, I was in awe of the beautiful seascape.

Where we stayed: a unique Airbnb with panoramic views of the sea

Where we ate: Ristorante L’Ancora, Hotel Covo dei Saraceni, La Zagara, La Pergola

We arrived at our Airbnb and things got tricky. The house was along the main highway on a curve, with no easy place to stop. Joey stopped the car while we hopped out with our luggage and he took off to find a parking place (easier said than done)! It may have been a little challenging, but we found another gem with this place! We had a spectacular view of the ocean and surrounding hills, overlooking all of Positano! Once Joey found a place to park (illegally, oops), he made it back to us and we embarked on our journey.

On our first night, we may have gotten in a little over our heads. Our intention was to try a restaurant called La Tagliata, which is a mountaintop/treetop restaurant with great views. On our walk up, we asked a local if we were heading the correct way. His simple reply was, “Many, many steps!” Psh, no big deal. Umm, he wasn’t kidding. We’re talking of hundreds of steps up the side of a mountain. Unfortunately, our GPS failed us a bit and after spending far too long with no end in sight (getting hangry at this point) and my fear of heights taking over, we gave up. We should have listened to the local. He wasn’t kidding! We couldn’t be too upset when we turned around to head back down, only to catch the most stunning views of the sun setting over the hills and sea. The skies were the prettiest shades of pink and purple, and the twinkling lights of the city added a complementary touch.

Getting back into town, we grabbed dinner at Ristorante L’Ancora. I honestly don’t remember what we ate, but we sipped our first and only Limoncello. Strong, but not too bad! When in… Positano, right?

Taking advantage of the perfect October weather, we spent the next morning capturing sunrise photos along the beach (Kelly Braman Photography).

For the rest of the day, we explored the many things Positano has to offer. We found our way through countless shops scented with the sweetest lemon aromas. We enjoyed coffee and pastries at La Zagara restaurant. We tried our first lemon sorbet at Hotel Covo dei Saraceni. Not only was it totally photo-worthy, it was SO GOOD! We walked along the pebbly beach and collected beach glass. We rounded out our night by having more pizza at La Pergola restaurant which provided some great people-watching along the beach. We treated ourselves to more sweets and some souvenirs at the local jewelry shops.

Something you should know about Positano: you have to work for it. The city is built almost vertically, requiring countless steps to get just about everywhere. Staying higher up above the city meant even further that we had to walk to get to the main attractions. The town has become a very popular tourist attraction over the last few years, so parking is a nightmare, hence why we ended up unknowingly parking illegally (residents only). Yes, we got a ticket. Turns out, it was cheaper than the paid parking lots! To be clear, this is not me advising you to park illegally!

I don’t regret a thing about our time in Positano, but if you’re considering traveling there, it’s important to know what to expect. Overall, I recommend visiting Positano at least once in your life. The charm and character of Positano have certainly captured a special place in my heart.
